CBD oil is often applauded for its benefits of bettering sleep, alleviating pain, preventing acne, reducing blood pressure and neuroinflammation, and combating anxiety. It’s safe to assume that many of these benefits would attract potential users, especially those who suffer from anxiety. This post will give you a comprehensive guide in using CBD oil for anxiety and provide some recommended products to unlock your true potential.
Anxiety and its Prevalence
According to Oliva Grace Griswold, a writer at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, anxiety is the most common mental disorder as 30 percent of the population suffers (or has suffered) from just a few of these disorders: generalized anxiety, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
SingleCare has estimated that 264 million adults worldwide have one of the identified anxiety disorders. Do note, 179 million of these adults were female and 105 million were men. Shockingly, reports of mental disorders have skyrocketed by 50 percent between 1990 and 2013.
It’s no surprise that a person would consider using CBD oil to eradicate the harmful symptoms that come with clinical anxiety, so now we’ll cover how CBD oil works.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
When a person suffers from anxiety, their body is unable to achieve homeostasis - a relaxed state - even when their environment is stable and free of any threats. According to Surgeon Fish CBD, CBD oil combats anxiety by signaling your endocannabinoid system to reduce feelings of panic, fear, and anxiousness.
Although some of the functions of the endocannabinoid system are still unknown to scientists and researchers, there are still a few tasks that the system has been proven to manage:
- Chronic pain
- Sleeping patterns
- Stress and anxiety
When CBD oil enters the body, the endocannabinoid system “interacts with it as if it were the naturally occurring compound anandamide.” Anandamide is a naturally occurring fatty acid that is associated with alleviating mood and was also the first endocannabinoid discovered by researchers.
CBD oil has also been reported to increase blood flow in the hippocampus, which - as a result - relieves anxiety. Stimulation of the amygdala has also been proven to decrease stress, fear, and bad memories.
To summarize things nice and sweet, CBD harbors many positive effects that help center the equilibrium and help a person return to homeostasis.
Different Ways of Using CBD Oil
There are several ways that you can use CBD for problems unrelated to anxiety, but here we’ll list how CBD oil specifically can be administered for the best results:
- Mixing the oil into food or drink
- Taking the oil with a pipette under your tongue
- Swallowing capsules
- Spraying it under your tongue
What makes CBD oil a great choice for consumption is that CBD oils contain CBD from a cannabis plant while diluting the substance with hemp seed or coconut oil. The effects of orally administered CBD, like oils, edibles, or capsules, appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours.
It’s unclear as to how long CBD oil stays in your system since it can vary on how CBD is administered and how much was taken, but a rough estimate of its effects ranges anywhere between 2 to 6 hours.
Another iCBD Blog has provided valuable insight on the benefits of CBD, so here we’ll list a few types of CBD that can be used to better your lifestyle:
- CBD tinctures
- CBD gummies
- CBD pills
- CBD infused drinks
- CBD lotions and creams
Can I Take CBD Oil with Anti-Depressants?
Certain anti-depressants can trigger adverse side effects or render your medication useless if your treatment plan calls for CBD oil. According to CBD Oil Review, Anti-depressants like SNRI’s (Pristiq, Cymbalta, Effexor XR) and NDRI’s (Wellbutrin, Forfivo, Aplenzin) may decrease the efficacy of these medications.
On the other hand, MAOI’s (Marplan, Nardil, Emsam) and TCA’s (Anafranil, Norpramin, Tofranil) may increase the likelihood of experiencing adverse side effects, so it’s advised not to take CBD oil when taking these classes of medication.
While you do have the option to wean off your anti-depressants if you want to start taking CBD oil for anxiety, only do so with the permission of your doctor.
How Much Should you Take?
Your dosage amount is subjective and mostly depends on the severity of your anxiety. Before you consider taking CBD oil for anxiety, please visit your doctor to see if this option will benefit your treatment regimen. This also depends on how CBD oil is being administered into your body.
Take into account some of these important factors before considering your available options for CBD oil:
- The severity of your condition
- The product’s potency
- Your experience with CBD oil
- How the product mixes with your current medicine
- The availability and cost of the product
A great reference to follow would be this post as it helps determine the amount of oil you should take based on your condition, but we’ll still give a summary of what dosages doctors have recommended for their patients.
For example, Epidiolex, an FDA-approved CBD Oil, is used to treat people who experience seizures from severe types of epilepsy like Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. The recommended starting dose is 2.5 mg/kg orally twice daily. After a week of use, the dose can go from 2.5 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg twice daily.
Depending on a person’s response to Epidiolex, the maximum dosage can go up to 10 mg/kg twice daily. Although Epidiolex has not been approved to treat anxiety, it’s still a good starting point when determining how much a person may take CBD oil for anxiety.
A 2021 study determined what the average starting dose of CBD was for their participants. 103 adult participants were included in the study but only 72 completed the three-month research. All patients started on a 25 mg/d capsule of CBD, but a majority of participants increased their dosage to 50-75 mg/d.
The results proved to be promising. During the first month follow-up, 57 out of the 72 participants reported that CBD improved their sleep quality and anxiety. The study reported that the only adverse effect was fatigue.
While this may be a lot of information to process, it’s important to recognize that you’ll have to do experimenting when finding the right dose for you. Just like when someone starts taking a new form of medication, a doctor will start you off on a lower dose to see how your body responds to the treatment.
Remember to be patient, and don’t fright if a specific brand of CBD oil doesn’t seem to be working right off the bat.
Best CBD for Anxiety
As mentioned above, you’ll want to do some experimenting to figure out which CBD oil works best for you. Types of OBD oil for anxiety vary from person to person, so it’s wise to use your best judgment and consult your doctor with questions.
If you’re interested in high-quality products, I recommend Don’t Be Sad CBD oils. For starters, you can purchase the 400mg product here. If the product is useful for your regimen, then you can try bumping up to the 1,000mg product.
These products only consist of two ingredients: MCT oil and Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract. Full-spectrum oils consist of multiple cannabis extracts and may also contain up to 0.3 percent of THC.
THC is known for giving its users a “high sensation” often associated with smoking marijuana. However, this amount of THC won’t get you high.
Though this product isn’t a CBD oil, if you’re interested in products that contain no traces of THC, you can also purchase ICB’s Broad Spectrum Watermelon Gummies. Each gummy has about 17mg of CBD, so these gummies can help alleviate your anxiety after a long day.
If you’re experiencing adverse side effects, you may want to consider readjusting your dosage or taking a higher-quality CBD oil brand.
